Moomin Coffee at Helsinki Airport

The client envisioned a visually striking yet cozy café for children and the young at heart – full of delightful details to explore. Amid the stress of travel, customers can take a moment to relax and enjoy the familiar atmosphere of Moominvalley, surrounded by handcrafted characters from beloved Moomin stories.

A Visually Exciting Café in the Heart of the Airport

The café’s fresh and vibrant color palette invites travelers to pause and enjoy. The interior is filled with subtle references to the world of Moominvalley. A tall blue wall with arched window panels behind the service counter echoes the iconic Moominhouse. Sharp-eyed visitors may even spot Moominpappa’s hat “forgotten” on one of the coat racks! Tree trunk–inspired green coat racks and the softly curved backs of the built-in seating help define the space while adding a cozy, home-like feel.

A Fishing Trip with Snufkin Before Takeoff

In the middle of the café, large white water lily–shaped elements hang from the several-meter-high ceiling. A meditative light installation is projected onto their undersides, evoking the magical reflections of water during a nighttime fishing trip with Snufkin.

The timeless Moomin Coffee café brings a touch of Moomin magic to the traditional airport environment. The project has remained one of the most memorable and enjoyable design assignments our team at Amerikka has carried out.
